Key lime, grouper, mango, stone
crab, snapper, avocado, grapefruit, shark, orange. . . these are
the flavors of life on Sanibel and Captiva; mix and match them
as you like. It’s possible to obtain many of these delicious
items from your own yard or dock.
Imagine inviting some friends over for cocktails and dinner.
You go outside, pick some grapefruit and oranges from the trees
next to the pool. Once you’ve sliced the harvest, you arrange
it on top of the snapper you caught this morning.
Reach in the freezer, pull out some fresh lemon cubes you made
from last winter’s crop. These are great for making homemade
lemonade.
Fire up the grill; it’s a perfect evening outside . . .
70 and a slight breeze.
Serve the stone crabs you bought from your neighbor as an appetizer.
When the snapper is hot off the grill, share a treasure by sticking
a dried mango chip in each snapper filet. Tell your friends that
only special people get to share this August bounty; mango chips
are time-consuming to make, but worth it.
Slice some fresh avocado from your yard, to add a finishing touch;
there you have it. Dinner is served.
And who’s at dinner? You never know: could be the CEO of
an international corporation, a retired sports hero, a famous
artist, a renowned surgeon from Chicago, a UN diplomat, a New
York editor on vacation, a young model, a couple who just moved
here from Minneapolis, a retired fighter pilot, a PR person from
San Francisco . . . on Sanibel and Captiva, the possibilities
are absolutely endless. Residents (and visitors) who are both
well-educated and well-traveled make up our wonderfully varied
island population.
